When Ducati's Were Red. Laguna Seca Ducati Island Turns 19

Near as I can figure, Ducati Island Laguna Seca turns 19 this year so when I found these old photos I thought they were worth sharing. There is, of course, a back story:
That little piece of land now known world wide as Ducati Island was originally under contract to another company. We heard a rumor the space might come available so my business partners and I made a deal with the track and rented it on a multi-year contract. The inspiration? ...

Interesting facts about WSBK at Laguna Seca
The Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is back on the World Superbike calendar after eight years. The Californian venue hosted the series from 1995 to 2004 for an overall twenty races. The only active rider who participated in one of these rounds is Leon Haslam, who was ninth and then retired in the two 2004 races.

Niccola Canepa has been drafted into the Alstare Ducati World Superbike team as a replacement for injured Spaniard Carlos Checa for the next round of the series at Laguna Seca.

Following a three-year agreement between Infront Motor Sports and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the United States Round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship will take place at the Californian circuit next season and in 2014 and 2015.

MotoGP insider Paolo Gozzi of GPOne.com believes SBK is in it’s last year at Miller. It’s well known there are problems with the Miller location and track, which make this round an attendance under performer. They include racing on Monday to avoid religious conflict, disadvantages for TV audiences in the rest of the world who are not on national holiday on Monday, and of course the already mentioned small crowds. In 2008, when the primary goal was to get the series back in North America, a market important to series advertisers, it was possible to overlook these issues. Now that both series have merged ownership, the perspective is different and it makes sense to consider a merge of venues, especially with so many N. American GP race choices.
