The Ducati’s rear end breaks loose and swings wide on the rutted trail, causing its knobby back tire to sling mud all over some unsuspecting pine trees. I pin the throttle and stand up straight to climb a steep, gravelly grade, shifting my weight over the handlebars as the front end struggles to keep traction. Then, just like that, I’ve crested the slope and shot out from the dark forest, emerging into Tuscany’s rolling green countryside.

Novegro is one of the largest Italian motorcycle swap meets held every year AND it's the same week as the Milan motorcycle show. I hadn't been in a couple of years so I headed over with some friends to check it out. Biggest difference? The Ducati stuff we never used to see was here in droves. That's a good thing. I have included a ton of photos this gallery because, well, it's acres and acres and you almost never see the same thing twice. So go get a beverage and join me for a walk around one of the coolest places a motorcycle lover could ever want to visit.

Big fun in a small car, renting an electric car in Italy
I get asked about travel in Italy by Ducati owners almost as much as I do about the motorcycles themselves, so I am adding some of my travel blogs to Ducati.net...

Take $1,140 Off! If we had to sum up Italy in one word, "sensual" would fit the bill. From the visual to the olfactory to the tactile, embark on a six day Adriatic adventure designed to tantalize the senses with sexy motorcycles, mouthwatering dishes, and jaw-dropping scenery.
The highlight of the trip is indisputably speeding through smooth backroads on one of the world's most beautiful bikes: the Ducati. Drool over the included 2014 Ducati Monster or upgrade to another 2014 dream bike including the Hyperstrada, Multistrada 1200, and Diavel 1200. But the roar of a clutch isn't the only attraction. During two days of rentals, customize a route with the perfect mix of curves and straightaways for nonstop thrills.
###*"Riding a race bike is an art - a thing that you do because you feel something inside." - Valentino Rossi, 9X World Champion*
Though the options are endless, we recommend heading to San Marino or Bologna for a true taste of Italy. Situated between rolling hills, the cozy town of San Marino can be reached along roads that wind through the mountains and hug the Adriatic's sparkling coastline. On the way to Bologna, take the world-famous Futa pass, considered one of the most spectacular motorcycle routes in Europe. Revel in perfect conditions, challenging curves, and breathtaking views on the way to the Feretti Beach Hotel in Rimini.
This four-star stay doubles as the headquarters for this high-octane escape, so it's no surprise that the excitement doesn't end with parking the bike. During the day, the beachfront is bedecked with bronzed bodies, but nightfall only makes things hotter. A luxurious room featuring elegant decor and plush bedding is just the kind of respite riders need after thrilling days on the road. Of course, no Italian escape would be complete without classic cuisine: keep the tank filled with gourmet breakfasts and dinners that make the tastebuds buzz with ecstasy.
Those who crave an escape that's far more than a mere vacation will find their appetite for excitement sated with six days of sun, speed, and savory fare on the Adriatic coast. The only question: Which will make your mouth water more, a perfect plate of pasta or the purr of a high-performance engine? Either way, che bello.
Not sure how long this sale is for but it's hard to beat this deal for a Ducati riding in Italy vacation...

It’s hard not to love Misano World Circuit. Located in between the Adriatic Sea and the Republic of San Marino about one and a half hours from Bologna, it’s iconic, well kept, well run and just the right size for walking around. Considered a home circuit for Ducati, the Italian brand’s history is thick here. So when I heard the track was organizing a three day vintage event called the Misano Classic Weekend it got my attention – I figured it was safe to expect a great turnout of interesting Italian machines and with a mini Motogiro event attached to it. I’m not going to lie, the siren call of riding around the Italian countryside on a vintage Ducati was crazy appealing. I sent in my entry and headed straight there from Barber Vintage Festival....

An area of Italy near Bologna is the birthplace of both Ferrari and Lamborghini sports cars, as well as the home of other high-end car and motorcycle makers like Pagani, Ducati and Maserati.
The region Emilia-Romagna is also the home of tortellini, Bolognese sauce and Parmesan cheese, but that wasn't the purpose of this visit, which was all about cars - fast, shiny and expensive cars.
On a recent trip to Italy, my son and I decided to take a tour of some of these facilities as a way to take a break from the churches and art, which I loved, but he only tolerated. I tried to research the logistics of visiting a couple of these factories and museums from home before we left, but found the idea of driving the unfamiliar Italian roads somewhat overwhelming. Thankfully, I came across the Motorstars Tours' website (motorstars.org), which offers day trips to a variety of these sites, with pickup in Bologna.

We get asked all the time how to tour the various factories when visiting the Motor Valley region. This tour seems like a good option.

Americans think they know cars and motorcycles. Sure we do, why wouldn’t we? When you’re the land that gave the world the Shelby Mustang, Dodge Charger, and Harley-Davidson, it’s easy to get a little cocky about your place in automotive history.
But let’s think seriously here for a second, if you’re going to really pick a place to visit as the “Land of Motors”, the Mecca of Automobiles, are you going to prefer to book a flight to cold, industrial Detroit, or to the warm foothills of the Italian motor Valley, through Italy’s Emilia Romagna region, and trek through the Apennine mountains? Not convinced?
We liked this tour of our favorite spots in Italy...

No more stuffing your suitcases with delicacies bought in Italy, hoping the sniffer dogs at JFK or other American airports won't detect the banned-in-the-USA foodstuffs inside your luggage.
In the U.S., they're called cured meats, the French say charcuterie and in Italy, the word for cured-pork products is salumi.
Starting May 28, a four-decades-old ban on the import of many Italian salumiwill be lifted.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the Italian regions of Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Piedmont, and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano, are free of swine vesicular disease. Imports of pork products from those areas, says the USDA, present a low risk of introducing the disease into the U.S. The disease was first detected in the 1960s and can survive cooking and even long curing.

We come from all over. We speak different languages. We share one passion. Ducati is all we have in common and it’s everything. The obvious purpose of the World Presidents Meeting is to give the people who wave the flag the highest, a chance to live the dream. Ride Ducati’s in Italy, eat the food, experience the history and see the red, white and green glow that is Italy and it’s people. But what we take home, besides these memories is friendships, alliances, respect and camaraderie, with Ducati staff and other clubs. We hear stories of the price some have paid for their love of the brand (one President, who lives in a country that has become increasingly dangerous, was shot 4 times by thieves trying to steal his Ducati. He drove himself to the hospital, and now rides in a bulletproof vest). Maybe it’s not all so dramatic but these are the people that drive a car to the meet, with tents and boxes, so others can ride. For us, there is no explanation needed why we do it, if you have to ask, well, you probably wouldn’t understand.

It’s hot here. No problem as long as you keep moving, and stay off the highways. We get up early and hit the back roads, today’s schedule is an easy one on roads made for enjoying – good pavement, gentle curves and light traffic with sunflower fields and ancient architecture to look at. I am riding along mentally house shopping – oh! look at that one! It’s perfect! One perfect house after another every few minutes.
We are expected in Assisi and have been invited to park in the town center, in the shadow of a huge Botero sculpture. It’s high season here in Italy and the town is busy but the sound and sight of more than 50 Ducati’s pulling in to this peaceful place stops every one in their tracks....More here

Day two – Cattolica to Gubbio - Scooter crashes and swap meet scores
Today we are splitting from the group and heading straight to Gubbio, an ancient small town that boasts the second largest Roman amphitheater in existence. The ride over is perfect, no traffic, a relief after the non-stop traffic in Rimini, and the tunnels along the route are crisp and cool, the weather simply perfect, the temp in the low 80′s. A perfect morning ride.
We pass a scooter crash which seems to be providing the morning’s entertainment in the town, dog walkers and people strolling by are literally pulling up chairs to watch what looks to me to be a fairly harmless get off....More here

Italy: Government Runs Out Of Money. Can Not Mail Licenses...
You've got to be pretty hard up financially if you can't pay for stamps anymore. Unfortunately, that is what is happening in Italy, where the cash-strapped government has run out of money.
The Ministry of Transportation for the last two months have not sent out driving license renewal stickers, residency stickers, and letters to speeding riders telling them how many license points they have left. And the reason they have not sent these letters????? Because they have no money to pay for postage stamps!...more

2012 Ducati Dream Tours
Ducati is gearing-up for the new riding season with "Ducati Dream Tours," the perfect weekend escape that combines the unforgettable experience of visiting the famous Italian motorcycle Factory and Museum with the pleasure of riding a Ducati along the legendary roads that surround Bologna.
The experience starts on Friday with arrival and lunch at the Ducati Factory, before making a guided tour of the famous home and Museum of Ducati motorcycles in Borgo Panigale, Bologna.
From there, leave your luggage with tour staff, collect your pre-selected Ducati motorcycle and depart on a guided-ride through the Apennines of Emilia Romagna known as "Motor Valley". When you arrive at the incredible hotel of "Monte del Re" in Dozza, your luggage will already be there, leaving you to just check-in and relax before dinner.
The beautiful hotel, created from a classic thirteenth century monastery and famous for its regional cuisine, will become your idyllic base for the weekend and point-of-departure for Saturday's guided-ride into the mountains along roads recommended by the official Ducati test riders themselves. After stopping for lunch in the countryside, even a leisurely ride back to the hotel on your Ducati will deliver you early enough for a spot of relaxation before dinner in the friendly atmosphere of Ducati Dream Tour friends...more

“Motor Valley”, an 80km-long corridor of rich industrial land in central Italy, is a petrol head’s utopia.
The strip that runs south from Reggio Emilia to Bologna is home to the world’s best-known motoring names: Ferrari and Ducati, Maserati and Lamborghini. Around these hundreds of smaller businesses have grown rich too supplying niche automotive parts, from brake lights to leather seating trim.
But the sovereign debt crisis roiling Italy’s financial markets is taking its toll in the country’s second largest manufacturing region in terms of per capita production. While the largest businesses are surviving, for many of the smaller ones it is a daily struggle.
“The smarter and more innovative will survive, but we cannot ignore that some of these suppliers are suffering and will not make it,” says Gabriele del Torchio, chairman and chief executive of Ducati.
Ducati, like all the successful brands in Emilia Romagna, is an exporter. Eight out of 10 of its bikes are sold outside of Italy. Its largest market is the US, where sales grew 42 per cent last compared with 2010. To cater to expanding business in Asia, last year it opened its first factory outside Italy in Thailand.
Mr Del Torchio believes Ducati’s focus on innovation and its position as a premium brand, two aspects that successful Italian manufacturers have developed to beat off competition from China and India, gives him confidence that in 2012 he will be able to sell more bikes than he did last year. Even though January tends to be a slow month, he says his orders portfolio is “promising”.
Without its international exposure though, the outlook would be dire. Sales of motorcycles fell 23 per cent in Italy in January compared with a year ago.
Gaetano Maccaferri, head of the employers’ association in Emilia Romagna and of the conglomerate Maccaferri, says at a time of domestic stagnation when the International Monetary Fund is predicting two years of deep recession in Italy “it is evident that the health and growth prospects of the region are linked to exports and internationalisation”.
As in the case of Ducati, Mr Maccaferri says in terms of his own business, which has €1bn in revenues and interests in sugar and tobacco, energy, real estate and construction to mechanical engineering, the general outlook is positive. “Old Europe”, as he calls it, has come to a standstill, but Maccaferri’s operations beyond Europe are compensating....more on link

The authorities in Milan , Italy are using their grey matter, more than most politicians in Europe. Many big cities have started a congestion charge, the biggest and boldest is London, UK, charging you money so that you can come to their city and spend (or maybe earn) money.
Authorities around Europe cite pollution, traffic jams and many other reasons for the tax, and almost all charge anyone money to drive into their city, including motorcycles and scooters. It doesn't matter that PTW generate less traffic, and during the trip, generate less pollution. They still have to pay....more

Novegro Mostra Scambio is held in Milan each year at a fairground right next to the Linate airport. Because it's held in winter the crowd is mostly local - Italians, Germans with a few Brits thrown in for good measure. Americans are rare, the combination of the dollar vs the euro and the expected weather generally keeps them away. The meet covers three huge structures and a number of lots outside. So many people attend it's crazy - vendors and buyers are everywhere as far as the eye can see. And what they have for sale, well, that's where the photos come in because there's no way to describe it - from the amazing to the undefinable, it's all here in droves. Join me for a look at Novegro....
