They needed a race week-end not ending with gloomy faces in the garage and politically-correct answers in front of the interviews-panel. They needed the disadvantage’s figures starting to drop instead of increasing. In other words they needed a race like the last week Qatar GP. Not a miracle race but a solid start, good to understand that all the efforts done have not been vain. A boost for carry on with the hard work.

Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow finished fifth and sixth respectively in Qatar, with Dovizioso pointing to a reduced gap to the frontrunners as a positive point, whilst Crutchlow described his Ducati debut as ‘bittersweet’.

Qatar MotoGP: First Day
The night time racing has begun… 45 minutes of Free Practice 1 was halted by a red flag after a crash by Pramac Ducati Yonny Hernandez. Final results for Ducati Corse riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso who completed sixteen and seventeen laps respectively were thirteenth and fourteenth quickest times, and were separated by just a few hundredths of a second. Teams that tested at the track two weeks ago (Ducati Corse did not test) were up to speed very quickly. Fastest Ducati was Andrea Iannone in 4th.

We are in the middle of a desert, but it's nothing like the soft dunes of the old Dakar rally; here there is only rocks, sand and huge lighting towers to illuminate a track in the middle of nowhere. On the first day of school, Fenati and Iannone were the teachers pets, each just barely missing out on an A+, but they will have 17 more chances to hit the mark. The MotoGP race was all about Stoner and Lorenzo, but the Australian failed physical eduction. The CRT riders gave their best, but they might need to be held back for a year. Valentino Rossi played the class clown, and as the lights were being switched off at Qatar, the spotlight was left shining on his relationship with Ducati. But at least it wasn't boring.
The Good –

Nicky Hayden emerged on top of a four-rider fight for sixth place to be the leading Ducati competitor during Sunday's season-opening Qatar MotoGP night race.
Hayden, Hector Barbera, Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista swapped places repeatedly during the closing stages, with Hayden crossing the line just a fraction ahead of Bautista's Gresini Honda.
Hayden, the 2006 world champion, was 28 seconds from victory, but felt he had the potential to bridge the eleven seconds gap to Monster Yamaha tech 3 riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso.
“I felt we had the potential to run with Dovizioso and Crutchlow, but considering my injuries and limited testing over the winter, I guess sixth is pretty good,” said Hayden. More here: http://www.crash.net/motogp/news/178413/1/hayden_i_guess_sixth_is_pretty_good.html

Ryder Notes: Becoming Clearer
by julian ryder on the ground in the desert
Sunday, April 08, 2012
The mist is clearing just a little, and a few things are now clear. First, as we suspected after Winter testing, Yamaha have got it right. The motorbike isn't fastest through the speedtrap but it is the best package out there. All four Yamaha riders are happy: Jorge's on pole, Cal's on the front row for the first time, Ben probably would have been but for a second crash, and Dovi is happy. Why wouldn't he be? Looks like he got off last year's best bike and on to this year's?
The factory Hondas are both afflicted by debilitating chatter. Casey Stoner is sure it is due to the way the electronics are working and is already showing signs of impatience with the team, he obviously thinks they aren't listening to him. Mind you, he is also showing signs of impatience with the CRT bikes, the new for 2012 front brake lever guards, and most other things that come within range. However, Casey's problem is likely to reduce as the tyre wears so we may be back to last year where his idea of a bad day at the office is third place....more here: http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2012/Apr/120408a.htm
