American Ben Spies, who was making a long-awaited return to MotoGP racing at this weekend’s Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, has ruled himself out of the Indy race due to suffering a grade-three separation of his left shoulder after crashing in Turn Four during the Saturday morning practice. Spies’ right shoulder—which forced him to miss three months of the season due to damage suffered in a crash at Sepang last year that required surgery—was apparently uninjured. Although he will see doctors on Monday to determine his recovery period, the severity of the separation of his left shoulder will likely mean the Texan will be out of action for at least three-four weeks at a minimum

Ben Spies made history on Thursday by performing the first drag-race-style pass of any kind—two or four wheels—on the back straight of the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval.
Built by Jeff Nash, owner of Advanced Motorsports Ducati in Dallas, Texas, the radical, open-header Diavelcould be heard on the opposite side of the racetrack. After a short warm-up run, Spies pointed the bike toward Turn 3, clicked the transmission into first gear and laid down a textbook burnout. Moments later, the PramacDucati MotoGP rider disappeared into the heat waves rising off the tarmac.

NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will continue for years to come. The MotoGP race might not.
That’s the word from first-year Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles, whose job it is to deliver the best return on investment for the owners of the company that employs him. Whether that includes the motorcycleevent beyond this year’s Aug. 16-18 event remains to be seen.

MotoGP is 100 times more compelling and impressive than any type of four-wheeled racing, and it should be, if not a top-five sport, at least more popular than the goddamned NHL. Which it’s not.
The world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a policy, possibly related to how world famous it is, against releasing official attendance figures for the events it hosts. Nevertheless, conventional wisdom has it that on Indy 500 day there’s an ass in every one of the 250,000 or so grandstand seats on the premises, plus a small city’s worth of revelers going HAM in the infield. The Indy is basically Woodstock (with a demographic that’s the opposite of Woodstock’s), and it happens every year. Google Image it. It’s pretty amazing, especially when you consider that, at this point in the continuing saga of the United States zeitgeist, the race—which, in terms of socioeconomic-strata- and region-spanning popularity, used to be something like what the Kentucky Derby also no longer is—retains about as much cultural cachet as New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
On the other hand, at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP a couple weeks ago—part of MotoGP, the motorcycle equivalent of Formula One auto racing—unofficial attendance at the Brickyard was, according to media-center scuttlebutt, between 60,000 and 70,000. Not bad if you’re the promoter and you’ve designed your budget properly, but it’s impossible to overstate how wan and tumbleweed-strewn the facility—whose 1,025-acre immensity TV doesn’t even begin to capture—seems when occupied by that number of people. If you’ve been to Busch Gardens ten minutes after the passing of a named tropical storm, you have some frame of reference.

Rossi reflects on ‘big disaster’ in Indianapolis Valentino Rossi probably can’t wait for November when he ends his Ducati nightmare after the Italian suffered a humiliating defeat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday (Sunday).
Rossi was seventh but it was the manner of his defeat that left the 33-year-old deflated after he finished a massive 57 seconds behind race winner Dani Pedrosa in a race that provided only fleeting moments of entertainment for a crowd of just over 65,000 fans
